Benefits of Echalon® Raise & Lower Columns
Echalon® Raise & Lower Columns provide various benefits, particularly those associated with time management; a factor of significant importance in the Rail and Highways sectors.
The Echalon® Raise & Lower Cartridge
Raise & lower columns have become the standard solution for areas with restricted access. Our solution achieves easy, safe and controlled operation, without compromise.
Our Echalon® Raise & Lower system has been unique to the market since its Mk I debut in 2009. With the capacity to lower columns up to 12m in height, an improved appearance and a much-improved locking system to name but a few changes, our current Mk III model is our most advanced system to date.
ALC has cast aside any cumbersome winching equipment, opting for a self-contained spring-assisted ‘cartridge’ system. Requiring only one hand-sized key to operate, the Echalon® Raise & Lower system can be operated in even the most remote and confined of locations. This allows for ease of maintenance alongside minimal road closures, or possession orders in the case of rail work.
The spring-assisted cartridge can be fine-tuned through the door section, matching the relevant applied load. Once this is complete, the column will raise and lower smoothly with minimal effort.
With a locking mechanism to secure the lowered column in place, operators can safely conduct their work. ALC’s ability to install the cartridge at any orientation (360°) allows our clients to specify the exact angle at which the column will fall; a handy feature with regards to ‘safe working areas’ on railway platforms and avoiding objects in the vicinity of the column.
From lighting to CCTV, the Echalon® Raise & Lower system is the pragmatic solution.

In assembling the Echalon® Raise & Lower Column we utilise processes such as structural bonding, ensuring the products leaving our facility are compliant, exactly to specification and demonstrate the quality expected of ALC.
Inspection and Cutting: Both the column and the Echalon® cartridge are inspected before the column is measured, marked and cut.
Preparation: Burrs and the oxide layer are removed from the column’s inner surfaces to ensure optimum bonding. The Echalon® cartridge is then inserted as per the specified lowering direction and specific offsets before four structural adhesive feed holes are drilled.
Bonding and Coating: Structural adhesive is injected into the feed holes and cured for 30 minutes before the feed holes are then re-drilled and 6mm stainless steel electrical continuity pins are inserted. Finally, a pull cord is fed through a dedicated aperture at the centre of the cartridge and through the column for cable installation; there is no possibility of damaging the cable when raising or lowering the column.
The completed unit is inspected by our Quality Assurance Manager prior to dispatch.
“These are light enough to carry into position. The Hinge mechanism is very simple to operate so we could fit the lanterns quickly and get the columns up with a minimum of fuss”

“Southwark Council have been buying the Echalon® Raise & Lower Column from ALC for many years. They have been used successfully for the Council’s own street lighting. Southwark also has the contract to supply columns for all the London parks, and the Hinge has proven to be an excellent solution to the problems of limited access and ease of installation.”
